Marizanne Kapp delivered a match-winning all-round performance as South Africa defeated India by six wickets in a crucial ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 clash. Her efforts helped the Proteas chase down a competitive target and boost their chances of reaching the knockout stage.
India started brightly after being asked to bat. Openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma provided a quick start, putting pressure on the South African bowlers during the powerplay. However, South Africa gradually regained control through disciplined bowling and timely breakthroughs.
Kapp struck an important blow by removing Mandhana, while Shabnim Ismail also chipped in with key wickets. Despite useful contributions from Harmanpreet Kaur and Deepti Sharma in the middle order, India struggled to maintain momentum in the latter half of the innings and finished on 158/7 in their 20 overs.

Kapp was the standout bowler for South Africa, returning figures of 2/27, while Ismail claimed two wickets to keep India’s total within reach.
South Africa recovered to complete a successful chase
India made an excellent start with the ball and reduced South Africa to 25/2 early in the chase. Spinner Sree Charani added to the pressure with a superb spell that left the Proteas facing an uphill task.
With wickets falling around her, Kapp took charge of the innings. The experienced all-rounder combined with Tazmin Brits for a vital partnership that steadied South Africa’s chase and shifted the momentum away from India.

Brits played an important supporting role with a well-made 40, allowing Kapp to anchor the innings before accelerating when required. The pair’s stand helped South Africa recover from a difficult position and stay ahead of the required run rate.
Kapp remained calm in the closing stages and punished loose deliveries as South Africa edged closer to the target. She finished unbeaten on 81, guiding her side to 161/4 with five balls remaining.
The victory marked South Africa’s highest successful run chase in Women’s T20 World Cup history and kept their semi-final hopes alive. For India, it was a disappointing result after a strong start with both bat and ball, as they suffered their first defeat of the tournament.
