Does the win against Brentford mean Champions League football for Man United? Here is everything you need to know

Manchester United are on the brink of sealing their place in next season’s UEFA Champions League after a crucial win over Brentford. The 2-1 victory at Old Trafford has left them needing just a single point from their remaining fixtures to mathematically confirm qualification.

Goals from Casemiro and Benjamin Šeko ensured United strengthened their grip on third place in the Premier League standings. With an 11-point cushion over sixth-placed Brighton & Hove Albion, the margin has made their position look increasingly secure.

One point away from confirmation

United’s path to qualification is now straightforward. One more point, particularly in their final-day clash against Brighton, will guarantee they cannot be overtaken. Even if results elsewhere fluctuate, reaching that mark would put them beyond the Seagulls’ maximum possible tally.

Two draws from their remaining matches would also do the job, taking them to a points total that rivals cannot match. Given their current standing, only Brighton or AFC Bournemouth still have a mathematical chance of catching them, and both scenarios require near-perfect runs combined with a dramatic United collapse.

Rivals need near-perfect finish

For Brighton to overtake United, they would need to win all their remaining fixtures while hoping United lose almost everything. Even then, goal difference could come into play, with United currently holding an advantage.

Bournemouth’s chances are even slimmer. They would need to win all their games and rely on United dropping every available point. The permutations underline just how close United are to securing a top-five finish, which is enough for Champions League qualification this season.

Carrick’s side close to milestone

Under Michael Carrick, United have steadily built momentum in the closing stages of the campaign. Their remaining fixtures include challenging games, but the cushion they have built means even a modest return will be enough.

Securing Champions League football would mark a significant achievement for Carrick, strengthening his case to continue in charge. The United boss recently revealed he had held informal talks with co-owner Jim Ratcliffe, signalling ongoing discussions around the club’s future direction.

With qualification now firmly in sight, United’s focus will be on finishing the job quickly and avoiding any late drama in the race for Europe’s top competition.
