The Indian Oil Durand Cup is set to kick off with an exciting clash between two of the Indian football giants East Bengal and Mohun Bagan Super Giants, coming into the new season both teams has partways with their coaches, Oscar Bruzon left the team after winning first Indian Super League and the Sergio Lobera’s successful journey with the maroon and green has completed its turn and they are now seeing new hopes with the ex Punjab FC coach Panagiotis Dilmperis. 

The exciting opener of India’s oldest tournament is set to be West Bengal’s new Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, followed by an honouring ceremony for Mohun Bagan’s late president Swapon Sadhan Bose. Tutu Bose, who remained one of the respected figures in Indian football, recently passed away at the age of 78. 

What can fans expect from Durand Cup?

With the Salt Lake Stadium awaiting another stunner, both teams are expected to make some changes to their game style. Antonio Habas, a profound coach of ISL from the first season, is set to maintain a solid defensive shape to frustrate the Mariners.

On the other hand, Pantogonis Dilmperis, who is making his debut in the maroon and green, is expected to start with his trademark attacking football.

Dr Indranil Khan, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Departments of Youth Services and Sports and Consumer Affairs, emphasised the importance of fan support as Kolkata prepares to host 16 matches of the 135th IndianOil Durand Cup, including the opening fixture and the final.

Calling it a matter of pride for West Bengal, he urged football lovers to fill the stadiums and get behind Indian footballers throughout the tournament. Khan also said the state government has worked closely with organisers to ensure smooth arrangements for spectators, including proper water management and other essential public facilities at the venues.

He stressed that a comfortable and well-managed matchday experience, coupled with passionate support from the stands, would boost the tournament’s success and further strengthen football’s growth in the country.
