Germany hammer Curacao 7-1, evoke 2014 memories

Germany delivered one of the most convincing performances of the opening round of the FIFA World Cup 2026, thrashing Curacao 7-1 in their Group E clash at Houston Stadium on Sunday.

The four-time world champions showcased their attacking depth and clinical finishing against the tournament debutants, with Kai Havertz leading the charge with a brace. Felix Nmecha, Nico Schlotterbeck, Jamal Musiala, Nathaniel Brown and Denis Undav also found the net as Germany kicked off their campaign in style.

For Curacao, Livano Comenensia etched his name into history by scoring the nation’s first-ever FIFA World Cup goal.

Germany seize control after Curacao’s historic moment

Germany took the lead through Felix Nmecha after a flowing team move highlighted the youthful energy within Julian Nagelsmann’s side. The goal appeared to set the tone for what many expected to be a comfortable evening for Die Mannschaft.

However, Curacao briefly stunned the Germans when Livano Comenensia struck to level the contest. The goal sparked celebrations among Curacao supporters as the Caribbean nation celebrated its first World Cup goal on football’s biggest stage.

The equaliser did little to disrupt Germany’s rhythm. Defender Nico Schlotterbeck restored the lead by powering home a header from a corner before Havertz converted from the penalty spot to give Germany a two-goal cushion heading into halftime.

Musiala and company overwhelm Curacao

Any hopes of a Curacao comeback disappeared soon after the restart. Jamal Musiala added Germany’s fourth with a composed finish before Nathaniel Brown joined the scoresheet with a close-range effort.

Substitute Denis Undav then made an immediate impact by netting Germany’s sixth goal of the evening, underlining the depth available to the European giants.

With Curacao struggling to contain the relentless German attack, Havertz completed his double in style. The Arsenal forward raced onto a perfectly weighted through ball before delicately lifting his finish past the advancing goalkeeper.

Early warning to Group E rivals

The comprehensive victory sends Germany to the top of Group E and serves as a warning to their rivals as they pursue a fifth World Cup title.

While Curacao suffered a harsh introduction to World Cup football, the island nation can still take pride in Comenensia’s historic strike, a goal that will remain a landmark moment in the country’s football history despite the heavy defeat.

Germany, meanwhile, will be encouraged by both the result and the spread of goalscorers as they continue their quest for global glory in North America.
