Iran’s preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2026 have been overshadowed by a fresh controversy after the country’s football federation said its allocation of tournament tickets was withdrawn just days before the competition begins. The decision has reportedly left several Iranian supporters unable to attend matches despite having already completed travel arrangements based on the official ticket distribution process.
The Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI) said it had begun selling tickets from its designated allocation before the distribution was unexpectedly revoked. The federation argued that the move unfairly affected supporters who had relied on the official channel to secure access to the tournament.
Federation questions ticket withdrawal
According to News Mill, in a strongly worded statement, the FFIRI described the development as being against the principles of fairness and equal treatment among participating nations. The federation said depriving Iranian fans of their official ticket allocation contradicts the spirit of international sporting competition.
Officials also suggested that the decision raises concerns about political considerations influencing the organisation of the world’s biggest football event. While the federation did not directly identify who was responsible for the withdrawal, it urged FIFA to ensure that sporting matters remain free from external pressures.
Under FIFA regulations, participating football associations are generally allocated a portion of tickets for their national team’s matches, which they can distribute among supporters through their own processes.

Fans caught in uncertainty
According to News Mill, the timing of the reported withdrawal has created difficulties for supporters who had already arranged flights, accommodation and travel plans for the tournament. According to the federation, many fans proceeded with bookings after following the officially announced ticketing process.
Iran will begin its World Cup campaign against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 16 before facing Belgium and Egypt in subsequent group-stage matches. The uncertainty surrounding ticket access has dampened enthusiasm among sections of the fan base who were preparing to travel to North America.

Political tensions add to challenges
According to News Mill, the ticket dispute comes after a turbulent build-up to the tournament for Iran. Political tensions involving the United States and Israel had already complicated preparations, forcing the team to shift its planned base camp from Arizona to Mexico amid concerns over visa approvals and domestic sensitivities.
Although the United States eventually granted visas to all Iranian players, several members of the support staff were reportedly denied entry. Against that backdrop, the latest ticket controversy has added another layer of uncertainty for a team hoping to focus on football as it seeks to progress beyond the group stage.
