Iran is set to lodge an official complaint with FIFA over travel restrictions imposed by the United States during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, claiming the measures have hampered the team’s preparations and created an uneven playing field.
The Iranian Football Federation says its players and staff have been prevented from entering the United States more than 24 hours before their matches. As a result, the team has been based in Tijuana, Mexico, and has been required to travel to host cities in the US shortly before kick-off, before returning immediately after games. “The Football Federation of Iran believes these restrictions are inconsistent with the principles of providing equal conditions for participating teams and may affect their technical preparation.” It was added as quoted by Sportstar.
Iran unhappy with pre-match travel limits
The issue intensified ahead of Iran’s Group G match against Belgium. Iranian officials reportedly requested permission for the squad to arrive in Los Angeles two days before the game, allowing players more time to acclimatise and train. The request was denied, prompting plans for a formal complaint to FIFA.

“Under the coaching staff’s plan, the national team needed to travel to the host city two days before each match to achieve optimal technical and physical condition, and then return to their base the day after the match,” the federation said.

Head coach Amir Ghalenoei criticised the situation, saying Iran has been among the most affected teams at the tournament. Players and officials have also expressed frustration over the repeated travel demands and uncertainty surrounding access to the United States.
Earlier visa concerns resurface
The latest dispute comes after Iran raised concerns about visa delays and entry issues involving several federation officials before the tournament. Those complications had already forced the team to establish its World Cup base in Mexico instead of the United States.

Despite the off-field challenges, Iran remains in contention in Group G. The team opened its campaign with a 2-2 draw against New Zealand and now faces a crucial fixture against Belgium before meeting Egypt in its final group-stage match.
The Iranian federation is expected to formally present its concerns to FIFA, seeking clarification on the restrictions and urging the governing body to ensure fair conditions for all competing nations. FIFA has not yet commented on the matter.
