Few rivalries in Indian football match the emotion and intensity of the Kolkata Derby, but Sunday’s clash between Mohun Bagan Super Giant and East Bengal FC could become one of the biggest matches in recent ISL history. With the Indian Super League 2025-26 title race entering its final stage, the two Kolkata giants will meet at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in a contest that may decide the championship.
Derby with title implications
Both teams enter the match on 22 points, though East Bengal sit on top due to goal difference. However, the head-to-head record is the primary tiebreaker this season, making the derby even more crucial. The winner will gain a major advantage in the race for the ISL trophy.

“Probably in terms of responsibility, Mohun Bagan will have more tension because they need to defend the title. But we are having a dream. And when you have a dream, you can move mountains,” Bruzon said.
He also admitted Mohun Bagan may start as favourites but backed his players to deliver. “If we need to talk about favourites, it’s clear that Mohun Bagan has the advantages. But I really believe that our guys tomorrow can play a good game, and we can take the three points with us,” he added.
Mohun Bagan holds a derby advantage
Despite the tight title race, the ISL derby record strongly favours Mohun Bagan. The Mariners have won 9 of the 10 meetings between the two teams, with 1 ending in a draw. East Bengal are still searching for its first ISL derby victory.

Mohun Bagan coach Sergio Lobera said the match will ultimately be decided on the pitch. “Words are very easy, but finally, we need to show this on the pitch,” Lobera said.
