Italy have named Andrea Pirlo as their new head coach on a four-year deal, entrusting the 2006 FIFA World Cup winner with the responsibility of rebuilding the national team after a difficult spell in international football.

According to Italian daily La Repubblica, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) first attempted to appoint Pep Guardiola, who reportedly declined the offer. Carlo Ancelotti was also considered, but his long-term commitment to Brazil until 2030 ruled him out of the race.

The 45-year-old is currently managing Emirati club FC United and is expected to leave the position in the coming weeks to officially take charge of the Azzurri. As a coach, Pirlo began his managerial career with Juventus, where he guided the club to the Coppa Italia and the Italian Super Cup during the 2020-21 season. He later managed Fatih Karagumruk in Turkey and Sampdoria before taking charge of FC United in the United Arab Emirates.

Once the remaining formalities are completed, Pirlo is expected to leave the UAE club and begin preparations for his new role with Italy, with the focus firmly on leading the four-time world champions back to the FIFA World Cup in 2030.
