Portugal chase elusive World Cup glory as Ronaldo prepares for final dance

Portugal arrive at the 2026 FIFA World Cup carrying both immense promise and significant emotional weight. Ranked fifth in the world and boasting arguably one of the finest midfields in international football, the Selecao are viewed as serious contenders. Yet, as has often been the case over the past two decades, the spotlight remains firmly fixed on Cristiano Ronaldo.

This tournament is expected to be Ronaldo’s final World Cup appearance, offering one last chance to secure the only major trophy missing from his glittering career. At the same time, the Portuguese squad continues to mourn the loss of forward Diogo Jota, whose death last year left a deep impact on the national team. The combination of ambition, expectation and emotion makes Portugal one of the most compelling teams to watch in the tournament.

Ronaldo remains the defining story

Even at 41, Ronaldo continues to dominate discussions around Portugal. While his influence is no longer as overwhelming as it once was, his leadership, experience and goal-scoring record ensure he remains central to Roberto Martinez’s plans.

The former Real Madrid and Manchester United star enters the tournament with 143 international goals and the chance to surpass the legendary Eusebio as Portugal’s highest scorer in World Cup history. However, concerns remain about his mobility, recent injury issues and whether Portugal’s attack functions more fluidly without him.

Despite those debates, few expect Martinez to leave his captain on the bench if he is fully fit. The tournament represents Ronaldo’s final opportunity to add a World Cup crown to a career already filled with historic achievements.

Midfield strength gives Portugal genuine hope

Portugal’s greatest weapon may not be Ronaldo but the quality behind him. The midfield trio of Bruno Fernandes, Vitinha and Joao Neves offers creativity, control and intelligence in abundance.

Vitinha has emerged as one of Europe’s most influential midfielders after his stellar performances for Paris Saint-Germain, while Fernandes continues to dictate matches with his vision and passing range. Alongside them, Bernardo Silva provides experience and technical excellence.

The presence of dynamic wide players such as Rafael Leao and Francisco Conceicao gives Portugal the ability to stretch defences and create opportunities from wide areas.

Comfortable group but bigger tests await

Portugal is expected to progress from Group K without major difficulty. Matches against DR Congo and Uzbekistan should provide an opportunity to build momentum before a tougher encounter against Colombia.

The clash with the Colombia national football team is likely to determine the group winner and offer an early indication of Portugal’s credentials against stronger opposition.

While doubts remain over Martinez’s ability to guide elite squads deep into major tournaments, Portugal’s Nations League triumph over Spain last year demonstrated their potential when everything clicks.
