US President Donald Trump will be present at Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain at the New York-New Jersey Stadium, the White House has confirmed. The visit will also see Trump take part in the post-match trophy presentation alongside FIFA president Gianni Infantino, continuing a long-standing World Cup tradition.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced the president’s plans during a media briefing, saying Trump was eager to attend the tournament’s biggest match.
“We look forward to the final match on Sunday, and I know the president looks forward to attending,” Leavitt told reporters.
She added, “His attendance will cap what has been the most watched, most secure, and most successful World Cup in American history.”

When asked if Trump was supporting either finalist, Leavitt declined to reveal his preference, saying, “I’m sure he’ll have a fun answer for you.”

Trophy presentation planned with FIFA president
Before Sunday’s final, Trump is scheduled to attend a FIFA reception at Trump Tower in New York City on Friday.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino has also confirmed that Trump is expected to join him during the trophy presentation ceremony after the final.
Speaking to Swiss broadcaster Blue Sport, Infantino said, “Yes, hopefully we’ll present the trophy together in the final,” adding, “That’s always been the plan, and that’s how it’s always been done in the past – the president of the country where the final is held presents the trophy together with the Fifa president.”
The tradition was followed in previous editions as well, including the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and the 2018 tournament in Russia.
Milei chooses superstition over stadium visit
While Trump is set to be in the stands, Argentine President Javier Milei has decided against travelling to New Jersey for the final.
Asked whether he would join Trump and Infantino for the match, Milei gave a brief reply, “No way.”
Instead, he said he would continue watching Argentina’s matches from the presidential residence in Olivos, just as he has throughout the tournament.
“I’m going to keep watching all the games from Olivos,” he said.

Milei explained that his decision is based on “cábalas”, the football superstitions many Argentine fans believe bring good luck. He also plans to wear the same jacket he has kept on during Argentina’s unbeaten run.
“Since it’s cold and I don’t turn on the heat, I wear an oil company-branded jacket. The day of the Switzerland game, it made me really hot. I took it off, and they scored a goal against us. I put it back on and never took it off again.”
