Will Neymar miss World Cup 2026? Brazil Star ruled out of two friendlies after injury

Neymar is facing yet another major injury concern just days before the World Cup, throwing Brazil’s plans into uncertainty ahead of the tournament. The Santos forward, who had only recently returned from a lengthy recovery period, has now suffered a calf injury that could keep him sidelined for up to three weeks.

The latest setback comes at a crucial moment for Brazil and new head coach Carlo Ancelotti, who included Neymar in his 26-man World Cup squad despite ongoing fitness concerns surrounding the veteran forward.

Fresh setback after long recovery battle

According to 101 Great Goals, Brazil team doctor Rodrigo Lamar confirmed that scans revealed a grade two calf injury following medical examinations. Neymar reportedly sustained the injury while playing for Santos against Coritiba shortly before Brazil’s squad announcement.

The injury has immediately raised fears over whether the 34-year-old will be fit enough to contribute during the group stage of the tournament. Reports in Brazil claimed Neymar was seen leaving a medical facility with a noticeable limp and appearing visibly frustrated after learning the extent of the injury.

The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star has already spent months battling to regain full fitness following the serious ACL injury he suffered during a World Cup qualifier against Uruguay in October 2023.

Ancelotti faces difficult decision

According to 101 Great Goals, the injury leaves Ancelotti with a major dilemma ahead of the June 1 squad deadline. Brazil must now decide whether to retain Neymar in the squad despite uncertainty over his availability or replace him with a fully fit player.

Before announcing the squad, Ancelotti had stressed that Neymar would only be selected if he was physically ready to contribute. The Italian coach also highlighted Neymar’s leadership qualities and influence within the dressing room as key reasons behind his inclusion.

Brazil are scheduled to open their World Cup campaign against Morocco before facing Haiti and Scotland in the group stage. Neymar’s injury means he could potentially miss all three matches if recovery takes longer than expected.

Joao Pedro could receive late call-up

According to 101 Great Goals, if Brazil decide to replace Neymar, Joao Pedro could emerge as the leading candidate for a late call-up.

The Chelsea striker was one of the notable omissions from the original squad despite enjoying an impressive season in England. Although he has struggled to make an impact internationally so far, his club form has placed him firmly in contention before Ancelotti opted for Neymar’s experience.

Brazil now face an anxious wait as medical staff monitor Neymar’s recovery in the hope that the country’s all-time leading scorer can still play a part in what could be his final World Cup appearance.
