India produced a clinical display to defeat hosts New Zealand 2-0 in the final of the FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup in Auckland on Sunday, reclaiming their place in the FIH Women’s Pro League for next season.
Goals from Navneet Kaur and Sunelita Toppo in the opening quarter laid the foundation for India’s victory as the side completed an unbeaten run through the tournament. It was also India’s second Nations Cup triumph after winning the inaugural edition in 2022.
The victory capped off a memorable campaign for India, which had already beaten the United States, Japan, Uruguay and Chile on their way to the final.
Deepika finished as the joint-highest scorer of the tournament with six goals, alongside USA forward Ashley Sessa, while Lalremsiami was adjudged the Player of the Match in the final.
India make a dream start against New Zealand
The hosts controlled possession in the early stages, but India struck first through a penalty corner in the fourth minute.
Navneet Kaur stepped up and fired home a powerful strike to hand India an early lead.
India continued to threaten on counterattacks and doubled their advantage in the 15th minute. From their fifth penalty corner of the opening quarter, Deepika’s effort was cleverly deflected into the net by Sunelita Toppo.

Disciplined defence keeps hosts frustrated
New Zealand gradually grew into the contest during the second quarter, but India’s defensive organisation remained intact.
Captain and goalkeeper Savita marshalled the defence brilliantly, ensuring the hosts were denied any clear openings.
India also created opportunities of their own, with Navneet coming close through a reverse hit, but the scoreline remained unchanged at half-time.
The third quarter saw India absorb pressure while maintaining their intensity in transition. Their compact shape repeatedly disrupted New Zealand’s attacking rhythm.
India secure Pro League return in style
New Zealand earned a crucial penalty corner early in the final quarter, but Savita made an excellent save to preserve India’s lead.
The Indian side remained composed under pressure and successfully closed out the match to seal a historic triumph.
The title also guarantees India’s return to the FIH Women’s Pro League, one of the biggest objectives heading into the tournament.
To celebrate the achievement, Hockey India announced a cash reward of ₹3 lakh for every player and ₹1.5 lakh for each member of the support staff.
India’s unbeaten campaign included victories over the USA (3-2), Japan (2-1), Uruguay (3-2), Chile (6-0) and New Zealand (2-0), underlining the team’s consistency throughout the competition.
