The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has asked Hockey India to investigate allegations of sexual harassment, intimidation and victimisation made by former India women’s hockey captain Asunta Lakra. The ministry has directed the federation to refer the matter to its Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) and submit a detailed report after completing the inquiry.

Lakra, who also serves on Hockey India’s Executive Board, wrote to the ministry seeking an independent investigation. “It is requested that the issues raised in Ms. Asunta Lakra’s email may be placed before the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) constituted by Hockey India under the provisions of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013, for its consideration and appropriate action, and the outcome of the same may be shared with this Ministry,” the communication reads.

Lakra alleges intimidation after raising concerns

Lakra accused Hockey India secretary general Bhola Nath Singh of intimidating her after she highlighted allegations of sexual harassment involving women players. She claimed that instead of supporting complainants and whistleblowers, the system attempted to silence them through pressure and retaliation.

The complaint is linked to the case of former Eklavya Hockey Academy coach Sudhir Gola, who was removed from his position following allegations of sexual harassment. Lakra alleged that those trying to expose misconduct were subjected to victimisation rather than receiving institutional support.

Ministry seeks report after inquiry

Lakra also stated that 31 hockey players from Jharkhand, including several who have represented India at different levels, submitted a complaint against Bhola Nath Singh to the state government. She urged authorities to ensure a safe environment for women athletes and strengthen mechanisms to protect those reporting misconduct.

The Sports Ministry has now asked Hockey India’s Internal Complaints Committee to investigate the allegations and submit its findings. The inquiry is expected to determine whether proper procedures were followed and whether further action is required. The case has once again brought the focus on athlete safety, workplace accountability and the importance of an effective grievance redressal system in Indian sport.
