OpenAI posts nearly $6 billion Q1 revenue, edges Anthropic, says report

OpenAI and Anthropic are intensifying their competition in the artificial intelligence sector, with both firms reporting strong revenue growth amid expectations of a potential initial public offering (IPO), according to The Information.

Revenue claims amid growing rivalry

As per The Information, OpenAI reported approximately $6 billion in revenue in the first quarter, marginally higher than its competitor Anthropic’s reported figures. The report, citing two unnamed individuals familiar with OpenAI’s financials, stated that the company generated about $5.7 billion during the quarter.

The developments come shortly after Anthropic indicated that it is close to posting a profitable quarter, further sharpening the competitive narrative between the two AI firms as they scale commercial operations globally.

Product expansion and commercial push

According to The Information, OpenAI’s revenue streams are increasingly driven by ChatGPT subscriptions, enterprise solutions, and newer initiatives such as its coding agent Codex. The report added that early experimentation with advertising on ChatGPT and business-oriented tools has also contributed to growth.

Anthropic, meanwhile, has expanded its own coding-focused product suite with Claude Code, which was launched earlier in 2025. OpenAI introduced Codex later the same year, with broader rollout and promotional activity occurring subsequently.

The report noted that while ChatGPT remains OpenAI’s primary consumer product, enterprise AI offerings and developer tools are becoming more significant contributors to overall revenue. These developments, The Information reported, suggest that OpenAI remains on track toward its long-term revenue target of approximately $30 billion by 2026.

Anthropic, in contrast, has projected its Q2 revenue at around $10.9 billion, underscoring the rapid scale-up of both companies in the generative AI market.
