Maruti Suzuki to unveil India’s first E100 flex-fuel vehicle on June 5

Maruti Suzuki is set to unveil one of India’s first E100 flex-fuel vehicles on June 5, marking a significant development in the country’s push toward ethanol-powered mobility. The announcement comes as the government intensifies efforts to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels and promote cleaner automotive alternatives.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari confirmed the upcoming launch during an event in Nagpur, saying the unveiling would take place on Environment Day in Delhi.

Gadkari said flex-fuel technology would soon become more common across the Indian automotive sector as manufacturers expand their focus on ethanol-compatible vehicles.

Government pushes ethanol-based mobility

According to Firstpost, the Centre has been aggressively promoting ethanol blending as part of its broader energy strategy. India currently follows the E20 fuel mandate in many regions, but the government is now encouraging the development of vehicles capable of running on much higher ethanol concentrations, including E100.

Speaking about the transition, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said the country imports nearly 87 per cent of its petrol, diesel, and gas requirements, making fuel dependency a major economic challenge. He also pointed to the environmental benefits of ethanol-powered vehicles, saying they could help lower pollution levels while reducing import bills.

According to the Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, several automobile companies, including Toyota, Tata, Mahindra, and Suzuki, have already introduced flex-fuel-compatible vehicles or prototypes in India.

Fronx flex-fuel version likely to take centre stage

As per Firstpost, while Maruti Suzuki has not officially confirmed which model will debut with the E100-compatible setup, industry attention is centred on the Maruti Suzuki Fronx flex-fuel concept showcased earlier at the Japan Mobility Show 2025.

Suzuki had displayed a flex-fuel version of the Fronx alongside ethanol-ready motorcycles and alternative fuel concepts during the event. Although the company did not specify the exact ethanol compatibility of the showcased SUV at the time, it highlighted the brand’s broader focus on sustainable mobility solutions.

The Fronx currently sold in India comes with either a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine or a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine. International versions, including the Japan-spec model, feature a larger 1.5-litre K-series petrol engine.

Flex-fuel vehicles could shape India’s next auto shift

According to Firstpost, Flex-fuel vehicles are designed to run on varying blends of petrol and ethanol, ranging from standard petrol mixes to nearly pure ethanol. Ethanol, typically produced from crops such as sugarcane and corn, is seen as a cleaner and domestically available alternative to conventional fuels.

Automakers have increasingly begun exploring flex-fuel technology as India pushes toward greener transportation policies without relying entirely on electric vehicles.
