‘Double engine’ government boosts rail push as Centre approves 3 projects for Bengal

A fresh push to railway infrastructure in West Bengal is on the cards, with the Centre approving surveys for three new projects. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has written to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, seeking the state’s consent to begin survey work for the proposed lines.

Centre clears surveys for three key rail projects

The Centre has approved initial steps for three railway developments across different regions of the state:

A double line between New Jalpaiguri and Siliguri

Extension of the Santragachi to Jaypur line in Jhargram

A new 107-kilometre rail line from Shalbani in Bankura to Adra

These projects are currently at the survey stage, which is a prerequisite before construction planning begins.

North Bengal connectivity set to improve with new rail line

Among the proposals, the New Jalpaiguri to Siliguri double line is expected to strengthen rail movement in North Bengal. Once completed, it could ease congestion on existing routes and improve overall connectivity in the region. Railway officials believe this development may also streamline goods transportation, making logistics more efficient.

Jangalmahal likely to benefit from new rail link

The proposed railway line between Shalbani and Adra is seen as significant for the Jangalmahal belt. Improved rail access in this area is expected to make travel easier for residents while also opening up new avenues for local development. Better connectivity often leads to increased economic activity in such regions.

Rail boost may unlock tourism potential and economic growth

The extension of the Santragachi to Jaypur railway line is likely to have a wider socio-economic impact. Railway officials indicate that this stretch could support tourism growth while also improving daily commuting options. Enhanced rail links in this corridor may encourage the movement of both passengers and goods.

Officials also point out that these projects, once executed, could generate employment during both construction and operational phases. Expansion of railway infrastructure is often linked to broader economic activity, and these projects are expected to contribute in that direction.

With survey approvals in place, the next steps will depend on coordination between the Centre and the state government.
