A fresh push to railway infrastructure in West Bengal is on the cards, with the Centre approving surveys for three new projects. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has written to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, seeking the state’s consent to begin survey work for the proposed lines.
Centre clears surveys for three key rail projects
The Centre has approved initial steps for three railway developments across different regions of the state:
A double line between New Jalpaiguri and Siliguri
Extension of the Santragachi to Jaypur line in Jhargram
A new 107-kilometre rail line from Shalbani in Bankura to Adra
These projects are currently at the survey stage, which is a prerequisite before construction planning begins.

North Bengal connectivity set to improve with new rail line
Among the proposals, the New Jalpaiguri to Siliguri double line is expected to strengthen rail movement in North Bengal. Jangalmahal likely to benefit from new rail link
The proposed railway line between Shalbani and Adra is seen as significant for the Jangalmahal belt.
