A new mode of public transport could soon become part of daily life in Kolkata. Following the success of the Water Metro model in Kochi, authorities are now preparing to introduce a similar service on the Hooghly River, connecting key points across Kolkata and Howrah.
Kolkata joins the national Water Metro initiative
Kolkata has been selected as one of the cities where the Water Metro model will be introduced as part of a broader push to expand water-based public transport across India. The project aims to make greater use of the Hooghly River, which has long played a central role in the city’s transport and trade network.

The proposed system is expected to offer an alternative to congested roads and packed suburban rail services. By integrating waterways into the urban transport network, planners hope to create a faster and more sustainable commuting option for residents, per a report by Zee News.
New jetties planned across the river network
As part of the project, 41 new jetties have reportedly been approved to support Water Metro operations. These terminals will help connect important locations on both sides of the Hooghly, allowing passengers to travel between Kolkata and Howrah using modern ferry-style services.
The expanded river transport infrastructure is expected to strengthen last-mile connectivity and improve access to major commercial and residential areas. Authorities believe the move could significantly reduce travel times on some routes while offering commuters another reliable transport choice, as per Zee News reports.
Inspired by the Kochi model
The Water Metro concept has already been implemented in Kochi, where electric boats operate as part of the city’s public transport system. Kolkata’s proposed network is expected to draw from that model while adapting services to local conditions and the geography of the Hooghly River.
Officials see the project as part of a wider effort to modernise urban mobility. With metro rail, suburban trains, buses and ferries already serving the city, the Water Metro could become another important component of Kolkata’s transport ecosystem.

Focus on faster and greener commuting
