IMD issues rain forecast for Bengal as monsoon arrives ahead of schedule

The southwest monsoon has reached South Bengal four days ahead of its scheduled arrival, bringing a welcome change in weather conditions across the region. Several districts have already experienced spells of rain and thunderstorms, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more showers for both North and South Bengal on Saturday.

While rain-bearing clouds have increased over many parts of the state, residents are keen to know whether the showers will finally ease the lingering discomfort caused by heat and humidity.

According to the weather office, the city is likely to witness light to moderate rainfall during the day.

The minimum temperature in Kolkata was recorded at 28.6 degrees Celsius, which is 1.4 degrees above normal. The maximum temperature is expected to touch 34.4 degrees Celsius, around 0.5 degrees below the seasonal average.

Rain forecast for several South Bengal districts

Weather officials have predicted light to moderate rainfall in Bankura, Purulia, East Medinipur, West Medinipur, Jhargram, Paschim Bardhaman, North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas. Some places may also experience gusty winds along with rain.

The IMD has indicated that there is no possibility of heavy rainfall in South Bengal over the next seven days. However, temperatures are also not expected to rise significantly during this period, which could help maintain relatively comfortable conditions.

Heavy rain alert for parts of North Bengal

Several districts in North Bengal are likely to receive heavier rainfall. Darjeeling and four other districts may witness heavy showers on Saturday.
