A spell of much-needed relief is expected across South Bengal as the Alipore Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rainfall from Wednesday. Thunderstorms, locally known as nor’wester, are also likely to occur during this period. The change in weather is expected to bring down temperatures by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius by Saturday.
However, residents will have to cope with uncomfortable heat for the next two days. Monday and Tuesday are expected to remain hot and humid across the region.
Kolkata sees intense heat with brief spells of gusty winds
Kolkata has witnessed bright sunshine since Monday morning, adding to the discomfort. Gusty winds have offered short spells of relief, but the heat continues to dominate.

According to the weather office, the city will continue to experience high temperatures on Monday and Tuesday, with conditions likely to improve from Wednesday. The minimum temperature in Kolkata on Monday was recorded at 30.0 degrees Celsius, which is 3.1 degrees above normal. The maximum temperature stood at 35.4 degrees Celsius, close to the seasonal average.

Thunderstorms, rain likely in south Bengal
The weather department has warned of heatwave-like conditions in several districts of South Bengal over the next two days. Districts such as Purulia, Bankura, West Midnapore, Jhargram, West Burdwan and Birbhum are likely to be the most affected.
From Tuesday afternoon, some districts may witness thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and rain. The intensity and spread of rainfall are expected to increase from Wednesday.
Districts including Nadia, Murshidabad, Birbhum, East and West Burdwan, Purulia, Bankura, East and West Midnapore and Jhargram are likely to receive more widespread thunderstorm activity.

North Bengal under heavy rain alert
In north Bengal, scattered heavy rainfall is expected to continue till Wednesday. The intensity may reduce slightly from Thursday, but rain activity is likely to pick up again afterwards.
For Monday, heavy rainfall warnings have been issued for Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, North Dinajpur and South Dinajpur. Malda and adjoining districts are also expected to receive significant rainfall.
