After days of intense heat and sticky weather, several districts in South Bengal finally received much-needed relief as thunderstorms and rain brought temperatures across the region. The change in weather, triggered by nor’wester storm conditions, has made evenings more pleasant for now. However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that this comfort may not last long.
According to the weather office, temperatures in parts of South Bengal could fall by another 2 to 3 degrees Celsius by Saturday. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are expected to continue over the next few days before conditions gradually turn humid again from Sunday onward.

Rough sea warning issued for fishermen
The weather department has warned that the sea is likely to remain rough along the West Bengal and North Odisha coasts. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea on May 28 and May 29 due to the possibility of turbulent conditions.
Rain and thunderstorm alert across South Bengal
Several districts in South Bengal are expected to witness thunderstorms with lightning and rainfall on Thursday. The districts likely to be affected include Birbhum, Nadia, Murshidabad, East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Bankura, Purulia, West Midnapore, Hooghly, and North and South 24 Parganas.
On Friday, rain activity is expected to continue in Birbhum, Murshidabad, Nadia, East and West Burdwan, West Midnapore, North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Jhargram and Bankura.
The weather department has also forecast scattered thunderstorms and rain on Saturday in Purulia, Bankura, West Midnapore, Jhargram, East and West Burdwan, Birbhum and Murshidabad.
While the ongoing spell has brought down temperatures significantly, the relief is expected to be temporary. From Sunday and Monday, rainfall activity across South Bengal is likely to reduce sharply. Along with rising temperatures, humidity-related discomfort may return once again.

North Bengal to see gradual decline in rainfall
In North Bengal, heavy rainfall is not expected from Thursday onward. However, most districts are likely to continue receiving light to moderate rain with thunderstorms over the next two days.
The weather office said that districts from Darjeeling to Malda may experience thunderstorms along with gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph on Thursday.
Light thunderstorms and rain are likely across most districts on Friday as well. From Saturday and Sunday, rainfall activity is expected to decrease further. Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar may continue to receive isolated light rain and thunderstorms at a few places.
