After days of sweltering heat and uncomfortable humidity, West Bengal may finally be in for some relief. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast rain and thunderstorms across several districts, with the monsoon already entering North Bengal and steadily advancing towards the southern parts of the state.
While the southwest monsoon has already entered North Bengal, South Bengal is expected to see its arrival soon. Weather officials have forecast rainfall activity across southern districts from Wednesday, while wet weather is expected to continue in the northern parts of the state throughout the week.
Kolkata likely to see rain and cloudy skies
According to the latest weather update, Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 29.6 degrees Celsius and a maximum temperature of 35 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, relative humidity is expected to remain between 66 per cent and 92 per cent. The maximum temperature in the city may settle around 34 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature could stay close to 27 degrees Celsius.
The sky is likely to remain partly cloudy. Some areas may experience light rain accompanied by thunderstorms during the day.
Weather system favouring rainfall across South Bengal
Meteorologists said a strong trough stretching from eastern Bihar to the northwestern Bay of Bengal is passing over Gangetic West Bengal. At the same time, a cyclonic circulation remains active over Uttar Pradesh. These weather systems are creating favourable conditions for rain across the state.
The IMD has indicated that thunderstorm activity may increase across South Bengal from Wednesday onwards. Districts including Purba Bardhaman, Murshidabad, Nadia, North 24 Parganas and Hooghly could witness strong winds reaching speeds of up to 60 kmph.
Most districts in South Bengal are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours. Gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph may also accompany the showers.
Monsoon arrives in North Bengal
The southwest monsoon entered North Bengal on June 9, bringing the possibility of widespread rainfall to the region.
According to the weather department, heavy rain is likely in Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Kalimpong and Darjeeling over the next few days. These districts may also experience strong winds with speeds ranging between 40 and 50 kmph.
Rainfall activity is expected to continue in the remaining districts of North Bengal as well, with varying intensity through the week.
