Potato farmers protest in Hooghly’s Goghat over cold storage crisis: Police, central forces deployed

Tensions flared in Goghat’s Hazipur area on Saturday as potato farmers staged protests in front of a local cold storage, demanding space to store their produce. Police and central forces were deployed after the situation escalated, with fears of a clash.

Farmers arrived with trucks loaded with potatoes and blocked the cold storage entrance. They alleged that despite being local producers, they were being denied storage space, while potatoes from other districts were being accepted.

The situation became tense when central forces were brought in, leading to arguments between farmers and security personnel. The cold storage gates were later shut. Police intervened and introduced a token system to manage the crowd, eventually persuading farmers to disperse.

Farmers allege discrimination in storage

Protesting farmers said they were unable to store potatoes in facilities outside their districts and were being turned away from the local cold storage as well. “We cannot store our potatoes in the cold storages of other districts. We are being sent back. Yet, potato farmers from other districts are coming here and getting space. Why this irregularity? This cold storage must take our potatoes,” they said.

Several farmers, including Babulal Dutta and Tarapada Bag, said they had arrived at the facility overnight with their produce, enduring rain, but were denied access. They demanded that local farmers be given priority in nearby storage units.

The agitation comes amid falling potato prices, which farmers say have hit rock bottom this season, adding to their financial distress.

Political reactions ahead of polls

The issue has gained political attention ahead of the Assembly elections. BJP candidate Sushanta Ghosh visited the area and interacted with farmers, highlighting their grievances.

On the other hand, the Trinamool Congress urged farmers to remain patient, expressing confidence that the state government would address the issue. Party leaders said the Chief Minister would ensure proper arrangements.

The Arambagh subdivision, known for agriculture, has witnessed growing unrest over crop prices and storage facilities, making it a key concern in the ongoing election campaign.
