Mamata Banerjee faces new police complaint over controversial rally remarks

A businessman has filed a police complaint against former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging that she made provocative remarks during a public meeting earlier this year.

The complaint comes at a time when Banerjee is already facing legal scrutiny in another case linked to her alleged comments on the murder of Bangladeshi student leader Osman Hadi. An FIR had earlier been lodged against her at the Cyber Crime Police Station in Siliguri by an advocate, as per several media reports.

Complaint against remarks made during election rally

According to the complaint, the remarks were made from a stage in Dharmatala during the election campaign period earlier this year.

A case has been registered under Sections 196(1), 351(2) and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Speaking at the rally, Banerjee reportedly said, “You are all safe because we are here. If we are not here, it will take just one second. When a community unites, it can surround and finish in one second. If you do not want your own destruction, do not be misled by the BJP’s propaganda”.

The statement had gone viral on social media and triggered a major political controversy.

Earlier FIRs over Osman Hadi remarks

The new FIR comes days after controversy erupted over comments made by Banerjee at a meeting on Rani Rashmoni Road regarding the Sharif Osman Hadi murder case in Bangladesh.

Following those remarks, FIRs were reportedly lodged against her at multiple police stations across West Bengal, including in Siliguri. An advocate had also filed a complaint at the Siliguri Cyber Crime Police Station.

With the latest complaint linked to alleged religiously provocative remarks, legal pressure on the former chief minister has intensified.
