The West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday clarified its stand on new members joining the organisation, asserting that it would not accept individuals with questionable backgrounds into the party.
Debjit Sarkar, a BJP spokesperson, told reporters at a press conference organised by the state BJP headquarters in Kolkata that mere membership of the BJP does not automatically mean acceptance into the party.

He stressed that individuals previously linked to corruption, violence or alleged atrocities against the public would not be accommodated. “The party will not compromise on its ideology and moral principles,” Sarkar said.
Inductions paused, misuse of party name flagged
The spokesperson also raised concerns about certain individuals allegedly misusing the BJP’s name and flag to present themselves as party workers.
He stated that some of them were indulged in illegal practices such as drug trafficking and made it clear that the party was not associated with them. Following the directives of the state president Samik Bhattacharya, all inductions have been put on hold, he further said.
The decision has come before the municipal elections and the party has made it clear that they would use their organisational strength instead of inducing members from other political parties.
BJP targets rivals, calls for restraint among workers
Sarkar also accused political opponents of attempting to malign the BJP by linking it to internal conflicts within the All India Trinamool Congress.
He claimed that deliberate provocations were being created to tarnish the party’s image and urged workers to maintain restraint despite reports of post-poll tensions. At the same time, he condemned alleged attacks on BJP workers and called on the administration to act impartially in maintaining law and order.
In light of the recent remarks made by Mamata Banerjee, Chief Minister of West Bengal, Sarkar stated that these were signs of frustration after a defeat in elections.
He added that the BJP remains committed to working for the people of West Bengal while adhering to constitutional and democratic values.
