Up to 30 US MQ-9 Reaper drones worth nearly ‘$1 billion’ reportedly destroyed by Iran

Iran has reportedly destroyed nearly $1 billion worth of US-made MQ-9 Reaper drones during the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

Multiple media reports, citing military assessments and regional sources, said between 24 and 30 drones may have been destroyed since tensions escalated. The Pentagon, however, has not officially confirmed the number of losses.

A frightfully expensive affair

Built by American defence company General Atomics, the MQ-9 Reaper is one of the most sophisticated drones used by the US military.

It is widely deployed for surveillance missions and precision strikes. Depending on the equipment and systems installed, each drone is estimated to cost between $30 million and $35 million.

According to Economic Times, the total value of the reported losses could be close to or even exceed $1 billion.

Over contested skies

Iran’s air defence systems have been actively targeting drones flying in and around disputed airspace since the conflict intensified.

Iranian media outlets claimed several drones were intercepted during reconnaissance and combat-related missions. Some reports also stated that the MQ-9 fleet is no longer in active production for the Pentagon, making the reported losses strategically significant.

Facts remain elusive amid the fog of war

The United States has not publicly verified the Iranian claims. Pentagon officials have not released an official statement confirming the number of drones lost or the circumstances surrounding the reported incidents.

Defence analysts quoted in international media said battlefield claims made during active conflicts are often difficult to independently verify, particularly when both sides are engaged in information warfare alongside military operations.

The MQ-9 Reaper has been a key component of US military operations across West Asia and other conflict zones for years.

The remotely piloted aircraft is capable of carrying precision-guided munitions and conducting long-duration surveillance missions. While newer unmanned systems are under development, the Reaper remains one of the most recognisable platforms in the US drone arsenal.

Military observers say the scale of the reported drone losses, if confirmed, would mark one of the most significant setbacks involving US unmanned aerial assets in recent years.
