Keir Starmer is reportedly considering stepping down as the United Kingdom (UK)’s prime minister, according to a report by the Daily Mail UK. The development comes at a time when the Labour government is facing mounting political pressure and internal unrest.
Citing a cabinet member, the report states that Starmer has already conveyed his thoughts to close aides. “He realises the current chaos is unsustainable. He simply wants to be able to do it in a dignified way and in a manner of his own choosing. He will set out a timetable,” the source told the UK-based outlet.
While there has been no official confirmation, the remarks have intensified speculation about a possible leadership transition.

Government faces mounting challenges
As per the reports, the Labour administration has been navigating a series of setbacks in recent weeks. Controversy around the appointment of Peter Mandelson and his alleged links to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein has drawn criticism.
At the same time, the party’s performance in local elections has raised concerns among party members about its electoral standing. These developments have added to the growing calls within political circles for accountability at the top.
Resignation and leadership challenge add pressure
The situation became more complicated after Wes Streeting stepped down from his role as health secretary. In a statement on Saturday, Streeting indicated his intention to contest any future Labour leadership race, effectively positioning himself as a potential successor.

He also called on Starmer to “set a schedule” for his departure, further fuelling the ongoing debate within the party.
Falling popularity deepens concerns
As per Hindustan Times report, recent data from YouGov highlights the scale of the challenge. Around 69 per cent of respondents reportedly hold an unfavourable view of Starmer, making him one of the least popular prime ministers in recent memory.
The findings have drawn comparisons with the brief tenure of Liz Truss, whose time in office lasted just 49 days.
With concerns growing among Labour MPs about future electoral prospects, some fear that continued instability could shift political momentum toward opposition forces, including those led by Nigel Farage of Reform UK.
As the situation unfolds, attention remains firmly on whether Starmer will formalise any timeline for stepping down.
