The White House briefly swapped politics for motorsport on Monday as US President Donald Trump hosted an IndyCar showcase ahead of the inaugural Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington, DC.

Videos from the event quickly spread across social media, showing Trump welcoming leading IndyCar drivers Alex Palou, Felix Rosenqvist and David Malukas to the White House. The gathering served as a preview of the street race planned in the US capital next month.

Addressing those present, Trump said, “This will be like no other race ever.” He added, “This will get the highest ever ratings of any such race.”

The event transformed parts of the White House grounds into a temporary racing display, adding another unusual chapter to a venue that has recently hosted sporting and promotional events.

Racing helmet and pit-stop demonstration

One of the day’s biggest attractions was an IndyCar pit crew demonstrating a rapid tyre change outside the White House, giving spectators a glimpse into the precision involved in professional racing.

Trump was also presented with a personalised racing helmet by Roger Penske, owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and several motorsport businesses.

Referring to the presidential limousine, Penske joked, “We hope you will wear that when you’re riding around in the Beast.”

Holding the helmet bearing his name, Trump smiled and replied, “I will.”

Several senior officials and industry leaders attended the event, including US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Penske Corporation President Bud Denker, Fox Sports CEO Eric Shanks and General Motors President Mark Reuss.

Trump also described the event as “a beautiful, a beautiful thing to watch,” saying it would be “the first racing event of its kind in Washington, D.C., history, happening as part of our great celebration of the 250th anniversary of American freedom,” while adding that the race would be “totally free” for spectators.

The showcase comes shortly after renewed scrutiny surrounding Trump’s relationship with FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Earlier this month, reports claimed Trump contacted Infantino after US forward Folarin Balogun received a red card during the FIFA World Cup. Balogun’s suspension was later overturned, allowing him to feature in the USA’s knockout match against Belgium, prompting widespread debate over the decision-making process.
