A Ukrainian attack on Russian-occupied Crimea killed one person and injured two others early Sunday, Moscow-installed officials said.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy separately spoke with US President Donald Trump about ending the war.

The attack took place in northern Crimea, and one of the injured was reported to be in serious condition.

Ukraine intensifies pressure on Crimea

Russia-installed regional governor Sergei Aksyonov said on Telegram that the assault left two others wounded but did not give details of the strike.

Ukraine has in recent weeks stepped up attacks on key infrastructure targets in Crimea as Kyiv seeks to isolate the Black Sea peninsula, which Moscow seized in 2014 and later annexed.

Western analysts and officials say Ukraine’s increasing use of long-range strikes has inflicted painful damage on Russia while Moscow’s advances have recently slowed to a near halt.

The latest violence followed a round of diplomacy that brought both leaders into contact with Trump on Saturday.

Writing on X, Zelenskyy said he called Trump to congratulate him on the 250th anniversary of American independence and that they discussed the situation along the front line.

“There is a real prospect of ending this war, and America’s determination will be crucial. We agreed to continue the conversation in person during the NATO summit in Ankara,” Zelenskyy added.

Separate calls, shared search for an end

The Kremlin separately described Putin’s call with Trump as “constructive.” Kremlin foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov said Putin congratulated Trump and the American people on the 250th anniversary of America’s independence during a call that lasted nearly an hour and a half. Their fourth conversation this year.

Ushakov said Trump reaffirmed his “readiness to help achieve a quick cessation of hostilities and search for peaceful solutions to settle the crisis” in Ukraine, while Trump’s envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner would continue mediation efforts and stand ready to visit Moscow.

Peace efforts meet hardened positions

Ushakov also said Putin repeated Moscow’s preference for a diplomatic settlement, provided its “fundamental positions” are taken into account. He said Putin accused Kyiv and its European allies of “betting on prolonging and even escalating the conflict” and told Trump that Russian forces were “confidently advancing, liberating one settlement after another.”

According to the Kremlin account, Putin specifically mentioned the capture of the Ukrainian stronghold of Kostyantynivka, a claim Kyiv denied.

The episode underscores how battlefield violence and diplomacy continued in parallel, with Crimea remaining a focal point of the conflict as the war entered its fifth year.
