‘World may get some good news’: Marco Rubio hints at US-Iran breakthrough in Delhi

Hopes of a breakthrough in the US-Iran conflict gathered pace on Sunday after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the world could hear “good news” within hours, signalling that a crucial deal to ease tensions and reopen the Strait of Hormuz may be close.

Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Rubio said, “I do think perhaps there is the possibility that in the next few hours the world will get some good news,” raising hopes of a potential de-escalation in the conflict.

Ceasefire extension under discussion

Rubio’s remarks follow statements by US President Donald Trump, who recently suggested that Washington is close to finalising a 60-day extension of the ongoing ceasefire with Iran. The proposed arrangement is expected to play a crucial role in easing tensions that have escalated since February.

A key element of the discussions revolves around the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route that has remained largely blocked since the conflict intensified.

According to Rubio, the developing agreement aims to address US concerns related to the Strait, particularly its closure and the impact on global trade and energy supply.

Under the tentative framework, Iran may be allowed to resume oil exports during the ceasefire period, while ensuring that maritime routes remain open. The reopening of the strait is seen as a critical step in stabilising the region and preventing further economic disruption.

Trump hints at nearing agreement

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said, “An Agreement has been largely negotiated, subject to finalisation between the United States of America, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the various other Countries,” indicating that talks are at an advanced stage.

The proposed deal reportedly includes provisions to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and facilitate limited economic relief for Iran during the ceasefire window.

Iran’s key demands

Iran has placed several conditions on the table as part of the negotiations. These include the removal of the US naval blockade, access to its overseas financial assets, and easing of sanctions related to its oil trade.

While no official confirmation has been issued by Tehran on the final terms, the coming hours are expected to be crucial in determining whether both sides can reach a formal agreement.
