A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck off the southern coast of the Philippines late Tuesday, adding to a series of recent seismic events across the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the most earthquake-prone regions in the world. While the tremor has raised questions online about whether it could signal a much larger earthquake, experts say there is no evidence that a single event of this magnitude can predict a future megaquake.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at 11:49 pm local time near Mindanao, approximately 21 miles west-southwest of Sarangani. The agency recorded the quake at a depth of about 42.2 miles.
The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) measured the earthquake at magnitude 6.05 and estimated its depth at around 10 kilometres.
