Jumanji: Open World trailer has finally been unveiled, giving fans their first look at the final chapter of Sony Pictures’ hit adventure franchise. Directed by Jake Kasdan, the film reunites Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Karen Gillan, but this time the action moves beyond the video game.

Sony Pictures also confirmed that Jumanji: Open World will release in theatres on December 25.

What happens in the Jumanji: Open World trailer?

Unlike the previous films, where teenagers were transported into the Jumanji video game, the new instalment turns the concept on its head.

The trailer shows Dr. Smolder Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson), Professor Shelly Oberon (Jack Black), Franklin “Mouse” Finbar (Kevin Hart) and Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan) entering the real world after escaping the game console.

The footage hints that the characters are trapped in a limited “demo mode,” creating chaos as they struggle to adapt outside the virtual world. Alex Wolff’s character is seen explaining that the video game avatars have broken free into reality, setting up the central conflict of the film.

Who returns for the final film?

Jake Kasdan returns to direct the final instalment after helming both Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Jumanji: The Next Level. The screenplay is co-written by Kasdan, Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg.

The film serves as the concluding chapter of the reboot trilogy, which began with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle in 2017. That film earned more than $950 million worldwide, while its 2019 sequel collected over $801 million globally.

Sony first revealed the title Jumanji: Open World earlier this year during CinemaCon before releasing the first trailer this week.
