India’s first bullet train, the Mumbai Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor, has now crossed a big construction milestone. Fresh government data shows that more than 61 per cent of the 508 km corridor has been built so far.
This information comes from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation’s monthly Project Monitoring Flash Report for June, tracked through the PRAGATI portal.
How much money has been spent

So far, Rs 90,966.89 crore has been spent on the project. The total cost is currently estimated at around Rs 1.08 lakh crore, but this is expected to rise to nearly Rs 2 lakh crore by the time it is finished.
Indian Railways is expected to bear this extra cost itself, without asking for more funding from the Japan International Cooperation Agency, which has already funded a large part of the project.
Construction progress so far
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared details of the work done with Parliament. Some of the key numbers are:
209 km of track bed has been completed
190 km of overhead electrification masts have been put up
452 km of piers have been built
356 km of girders have been installed
The corridor passes through Maharashtra, Gujarat and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. It will have 12 stations, at Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Billimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad and Sabarmati.

Work on the undersea tunnel
The project also includes a 21 km undersea tunnel. Out of this, 4.8 km of tunnelling between Ghansoli and Shilphata in Maharashtra has already been completed.
On the 97 km Surat to Vapi stretch, all civil work, including the building of river bridges, is done. About 86 per cent of the track bed on this section has already been laid.
In fact, almost 90 per cent of the entire corridor is being built as an elevated line, with the rest made up of tunnels, bridges and station areas.
When trains will start running
The first trains are expected to run on a 100 km stretch between Surat and Vapi, starting in August 2027. This will be the first phase to open, followed later by the Vapi to Ahmedabad and Thane to Ahmedabad sections. Eventually, all these will connect to form the full Mumbai to Ahmedabad line.
According to the minister, the entire 508 km corridor should be ready by December 2029.

How fast will the bullet train be
Once fully operational, the bullet train will run at speeds up to 320 km/h. A train that stops at just four stations will cover the Mumbai to Ahmedabad journey in 1 hour and 58 minutes. A train stopping at all 12 stations will take 2 hours and 17 minutes.
This project is India’s first bullet train and is expected to change the way people travel between major cities in western India, cutting a long road or train journey down to just about two hours.
