For 27 years, Bhoomi has remained one of Bengal’s most beloved musical institutions, creating songs that continue to resonate across generations. From college campuses to family gatherings, from radio airwaves to digital streaming platforms, the Kolkata-based band has built a legacy that few Bengali music acts can match. Formed in 1999 by Surojit Chatterjee and Soumitra Ray, Bhoomi introduced the concept of “urban folk”- a unique blend of traditional Bengali folk music with contemporary arrangements and relatable lyrics.

“When the present generation sings songs we composed before they were even born, it tells us our music has truly stood the test of time. We (Bhoomi) have been there, we’ve done that; and we’re ready to do it all over again. With 1,899 live concerts behind us, I have no doubt that our journey is far from over. We’re here to stay for many more years to come,” said Soumitra Ray, the frontman and one of the founders of Bhoomi.

As the iconic band celebrates its 27th anniversary today, its music remains as fresh and relevant as ever, proving that timeless melodies never go out of style.

The songs that became evergreen classics

Bhoomi’s biggest strength has always been its ability to make folk music accessible to urban listeners. Songs like Barandaye Roddur, Pagol Mon, Lale Laleshwari, Jeno Dhaak Achhe Aar Kathi Nai, and Chokhar Deshe have become staples of Bengali playlists. Even decades after their release, these tracks continue to attract millions of streams on Spotify, highlighting their enduring popularity among both longtime fans and younger listeners.

Unlike many bands whose music is tied to a particular era, Bhoomi’s songs have aged gracefully. Their lyrics celebrate everyday life, relationships, nostalgia, Bengal’s cultural roots, and social issues, while their energetic folk-inspired arrangements continue to keep audiences hooked.

Albums that shaped a generation

Bhoomi’s journey has been marked by several successful albums that helped define Bengali contemporary music.

Their debut album Jatra Shuru (2000) announced the arrival of a fresh sound. It was followed by Udaan (2001) and Isspecial (2002), both of which further strengthened the band’s popularity among young listeners.

The band’s creative peak continued with albums such as Paal Chhuteche (2003), Lokgeeti Local (2004), Dekhtey Dekhtey (2004), Bojhaai Kora Gaaner Gaari (2005), Gaan Bahan (2007), Lokegeetir Deshe (2008), Gaan Doriyay (2010), Desh Jurrey (2011) and Ekir Mikir (2016). Each release showcased Bhoomi’s ability to modernise Bengali folk traditions without losing their authenticity.

Several of these albums continue to enjoy strong listenership across streaming platforms, introducing Bhoomi’s music to younger audiences discovering Bengali folk fusion for the first time.

Digital success continues

Long before digital streaming became the norm, Bhoomi had already established itself as one of Bengal’s biggest music brands. The band later embraced the digital revolution, using online platforms to reach listeners worldwide. In 2016, Bhoomi shifted its album releases to digital platforms, recognising changing listening habits.

Today, Bhoomi enjoys a strong presence on Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Music, YouTube Music, JioSaavn, Gaana and other major audio platforms. On Spotify alone, the band attracts more than 167,000 monthly listeners, while songs such as Barandaye Roddur have crossed 1.9 million streams, with several other classics comfortably crossing the one-million mark.

While Bhoomi has consistently featured among the most popular Bengali bands across streaming platforms, there is no publicly verified data confirming that the band has remained No. 1 for any specific duration on any audio platform. Their songs, however, continue to rank among the most-streamed Bengali folk and band tracks, ensuring the group’s relevance even after nearly three decades.

A global ambassador of Bengali music

Bhoomi’s appeal has extended far beyond West Bengal. The band performed at the United Nations headquarters in New York in 2006, earning widespread appreciation.
