Waitlisted ticket? Here’s how Indian Railways may upgrade your seat for free

Indian Railways carried 741 crore passengers in FY26; here’s how its auto ticket upgradation system can turn waitlisted bookings into confirmed, higher-class seats at no extra cost

Waitlisted ticket? Here’s how Indian Railways may upgrade your seat for free

Indian Railways transported 741 crore passengers in the 2025-26 financial year, up from 716 crore in the previous year. The 3.54 per cent rise reflects a steady surge in travel demand across the network. To manage this growth, the national transporter ran multiple special trains alongside its regular services, aiming to ease pressure on routes with high passenger volumes.

With rising demand, Railways continues to rely on systems designed to improve the likelihood of waitlisted tickets getting confirmed. Two key initiatives include the VIKALP scheme and the auto ticket upgradation facility. Both are aimed at better utilisation of available berths and seats without adding extra cost for passengers.

What is auto ticket upgradation?

Auto ticket upgradation allows passengers to move to a higher class if seats are available there while their booked class is full. In such cases, the system may shift a passenger to the next available class without charging any additional fare. This process is carried out during chart preparation, just before the train departs.

To be considered, passengers must select the “Consider for Auto Upgradation” option under the “Other Preferences” section while booking tickets on IRCTC.

When did the system begin?

The facility was first introduced on January 26, 2006, on two trains: Mumbai Central-New Delhi Rajdhani Express and Mumbai Central-Hazrat Nizamuddin August Kranti Express. From February 6, 2006, it was extended to all Rajdhani Express trains and 30 additional services. Later, from April 1, 2014, the system was rolled out across all mail and express trains, including those with only seating arrangements.

From sleeper to first AC: How the upgrade ladder works

For seating trains, the upgrade sequence is 2S to VS to CC to EC to EV to EA. For sleeper trains, it moves from SL to 3E to 3A to 2A to 1A. In most cases, upgradation is limited to two levels above the originally booked class.

There are a few exceptions. Passengers in AC 2-Tier can be directly upgraded to First AC. Similarly, those booked in AC Chair Car may be moved to Executive Chair Car categories such as EC, EV, or EA.

Who is eligible?

This facility is generally available to passengers who book tickets at full fare. The Railway Ministry advises caution for those travelling under senior citizen or lower berth quotas, as similar berth preferences may not be available in higher classes.

Overall, the auto-upgradation system plays a key role in optimising seat allocation while improving travel chances for waitlisted passengers.
