The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has ordered officials across its 12 zones to shut illegal meat shops operating without permission along Kanwar Yatra routes and near designated Kanwar camps ahead of the annual pilgrimage. The civic body has also instructed authorities to take action against licensed meat shops found violating the conditions of their permits while ensuring civic preparations are completed before the yatra begins on July 30. The move comes as lakhs of Kanwariyas are expected to pass through the national capital during the religious procession that will continue until August 11.

Delhi illegal meat shops to face enforcement drive

The MCD has directed zonal deputy commissioners to identify and close Delhi illegal meat shops located along the pilgrimage routes or close to Kanwar camps. Officials have also been instructed to inspect licensed establishments and initiate action wherever licence conditions are found to have been breached.

According to the civic body’s office memorandum, the focus is on maintaining order and ensuring compliance with municipal regulations during the Kanwar Yatra. Authorities have already shared details of the 308 identified Kanwar camp locations with all zones, while additional camps may also be approved depending on the requirement.

Civic preparations underway across Kanwar routes

Apart from acting against Delhi illegal meat shops, the MCD has launched a large-scale cleanliness and infrastructure drive ahead of the pilgrimage. Officials have been asked to remove encroachments from all identified camp locations before devotees begin arriving.

The civic body has also planned intensive sanitation work, including deep cleaning of roads, removal of overgrown vegetation, continuous garbage collection and deployment of sanitation workers in three shifts. The aim is to maintain hygiene standards throughout the duration of the yatra as thousands of pilgrims move across the city every day.

Pilgrimage expected to draw lakhs of devotees

The Kanwar Yatra is one of the country’s largest annual religious pilgrimages, with devotees collecting holy water from the Ganga and offering it at Shiva temples during the holy month of Shravan. Delhi serves as a major transit point for pilgrims travelling through northern India, making civic planning a key priority.

Officials believe the action against Delhi’s illegal meat shops, combined with improved sanitation and traffic management, will help ensure smoother arrangements during the pilgrimage period. Civic authorities are expected to continue monitoring compliance throughout the event while coordinating with other agencies for public convenience and safety.
