Samsung Electronics has announced significant workforce changes in the United States as it shifts the headquarters of Samsung Electronics America (SEA) from New Jersey to Texas, affecting hundreds of employees across its consumer electronics business.
According to the company, 739 roles at its Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey office have been impacted by the relocation. Samsung said many employees have been offered relocation packages, while others have been laid off. Around 100 additional employees in Plano, Texas, including workers in the mobile division, have also reportedly lost their jobs, according to people familiar with the matter cited by Reuters.

Why is Samsung restructuring its US operations?
Samsung said the headquarters relocation is intended to improve collaboration by bringing teams closer together within Texas’ expanding technology and artificial intelligence ecosystem.
In a statement to Reuters, the company said workforce changes were expected because some employees may not relocate, while certain functions are being reorganised to align with business priorities.
Internal documents reviewed by Reuters described the move as an “enterprise-wide reduction-in-force”, while several employees also disclosed their departures through LinkedIn posts in recent weeks.
What’s driving the shift?
The restructuring comes as Samsung’s businesses move in different directions.
While the company’s semiconductor division is benefiting from record demand for AI chips and is expected to post a sharp jump in quarterly profit, its mobile phones, televisions and home appliances businesses continue to face pressure from rising chip costs and intense competition from rivals including Apple, TCL and Hisense.
Samsung recently announced plans to invest hundreds of billions of dollars in new semiconductor facilities, highlighting its increasing focus on AI-driven technologies.
The company, however, said there is currently no broad global restructuring underway across its consumer electronics business.

Samsung also confirmed that personnel changes at its IT services affiliate, Samsung SDS America, are linked to a separate headquarters relocation and are not part of a wider layoff programme.
According to Samsung, the company employed 11,770 people in the United States at the end of 2025, including workers in its semiconductor business.
