Residents across Kolkata are witnessing rapidly changing weather on Wednesday, with bright sunshine giving way to brief spells of rain. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast scattered showers in parts of the region as moisture continues to move into Bengal despite the weakening low-pressure system over neighbouring Odisha.
People stepping out during the day are likely to experience clear skies in one area and rain a few kilometres away. Along with these intermittent showers, high humidity is making conditions uncomfortable across the region.
Low-pressure system weakens as it moves inland
Meteorologist Sourish Bandyopadhyay said, “The low-pressure area that formed over the Bay of Bengal has now moved across Odisha and is progressing towards Chhattisgarh in a west and north-west direction. Compared to earlier, it has weakened considerably. By Wednesday evening, it will move into the Chota Nagpur Plateau region and lose further strength. The chances of rainfall will reduce further from Thursday.”

Districts likely to receive rain today
With the impact of the low-pressure system easing, the weather office has withdrawn all warnings issued for fishermen. They can now resume normal fishing operations in the deep sea.
The IMD has also stated that no heavy or very heavy rainfall is expected anywhere in South Bengal over the next five days starting July 29.
However, light to moderate rain may occur at isolated places until Wednesday evening in the following districts:
Bankura
Paschim Bardhaman
Jhargram
Purulia
Purba Medinipur
South 24 Parganas
Humid weather to persist across South Bengal
Although rainfall activity is expected to decrease from Thursday, the relief from heat will remain limited. Localised cloud formation could trigger isolated light showers in some areas, but humidity levels will stay high.
Moisture in the atmosphere and elevated relative humidity are expected to keep conditions warm and uncomfortable. According to the weather office, the discomfort is likely to increase further on Thursday.
North Bengal rainfall forecast
Rainfall activity is expected to remain more active across North Bengal.

A yellow to orange alert for heavy rainfall has been issued from Wednesday to Friday for:
Jalpaiguri
Alipurduar
Cooch Behar
The weather department has also forecast an increase in rainfall over the weekend. Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar are likely to receive isolated heavy rain on Saturday and Sunday.
