Can brushing with Multani clay whiten teeth? Viral trend raises health concerns

Multani clay, widely used in Ayurveda for generations, is known for its skincare benefits. It helps cleanse excess oil, dirt and bacteria from the skin. While some people use it as a face pack, others opt for soaps containing the ingredient. Recently, however, a video showing Multani clay being used to whiten teeth has gone viral, raising questions about its effectiveness.

Yellowing of teeth is a common issue, especially among those who do not brush properly twice a day. Habits such as smoking and frequent consumption of tea or coffee can also lead to stains. In some cases, plaque buildup contributes to the problem. But can Multani clay help remove these stains?

Multani clay does not take care of teeth. Multani clay cannot remove the yellowness of teeth. There is no scientific explanation for whether Multani clay is effective in dental care. This ingredient is used for skin care. Multani clay cannot maintain dental hygiene. It does not even work for enamel bleaching. Rather, regularly rubbing Multani clay on teeth can damage the enamel. Bacteria can even nest in the teeth. Therefore, using Multani clay on teeth will cause more harm than good.

Many people turn to home remedies to maintain the brightness of their teeth. Ingredients like salt, coconut oil, baking soda or lemon peel are commonly used. However, these methods offer only temporary results, and the effects do not last long. They also do not deliver satisfactory results quickly.

Other options, such as hydroxyapatite and hydrogen peroxide, may be used for teeth whitening, but only under medical guidance. Without proper daily dental care, maintaining the natural whiteness of teeth remains difficult.
