India captain Rohit Sharma’s ODI future has come under fresh scrutiny after reports claimed he was unhappy following a meeting with BCCI officials during the ongoing England series. Speculation has grown that Sunday’s third ODI at Lord’s could be the veteran batter’s final appearance in the format.
According to BCCI sources, Rohit recently met members of the BCCI selection committee, with head coach Gautam Gambhir also part of the discussions. The meeting reportedly focused on India’s long-term ODI plans ahead of the 2027 World Cup.

"You might see a completely different innings from Rohit Sharma at Lord’s so, I wouldn’t use the word "struggling" – Maybe the shots he normally plays on the up because of the double bounce, he probably felt they were not comfortable". pic.twitter.com/H7pTSa5zb7
The reports claim the selectors informed Rohit that they are looking to build a younger squad for the next World Cup cycle. Since he would be over 40 by the time the tournament begins, the management is said to be planning for the future. While Rohit was reportedly disappointed with the discussions, the decision on whether to retire has been left entirely to him.
Selectors shift focus to the next generation
The reported move is believed to be part of India’s transition towards a younger ODI squad. Rising opener Yashasvi Jaiswal is expected to get more opportunities as the team begins preparing for the 2027 World Cup.

Reports also suggest that the selectors have indicated Rohit may not be considered for ODI selection after the England series. However, no official announcement has been made, and Rohit’s future remains uncertain.
Team management continues to back Rohit
Despite the retirement rumours, India’s coaching staff has publicly supported the veteran opener. Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak recently dismissed suggestions that Rohit was under pressure, saying experienced players can deliver match-winning performances at any stage of their careers.
Rohit retired from T20Is after leading India to the 2024 T20 World Cup title and stepped away from Test cricket in 2025. He remains one of India’s greatest ODI batters, scoring more than 11,700 runs, including three double centuries. He also captained India to the 2025 Champions Trophy title and guided the team to the 2023 ODI World Cup final.
For now, there has been no official confirmation regarding Rohit’s ODI retirement. However, the reports have intensified speculation over whether the Lord’s ODI will mark the end of an illustrious 50-over career.
