Messi, Argentina squad hit by passport leak ahead of World Cup 2026

Argentina’s preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2026 have been disrupted by an unexpected security controversy after sensitive passport information of several players and staff members was accidentally made public. The incident, which reportedly involved captain Lionel Messi and other squad members, has raised concerns over data protection just days before the defending champions begin their title defence.

Passport details accidentally exposed

The controversy emerged ahead of Argentina’s international friendly against Iceland in the United States. Reports stated that an official team document circulated among media personnel and event officials contained passport details of players and coaching staff.

Such documents are routinely shared for logistical purposes, but sensitive information is usually redacted before public distribution. In this case, passport numbers and other personal details were reportedly left visible, resulting in an unintended data leak.

The breach quickly attracted attention, with fans and observers questioning how such information was allowed to be released at a major international event. While the leaked document was reportedly withdrawn after the mistake was identified, concerns remain over the handling of private information involving high-profile athletes.

Argentina stay focused on World Cup mission

Despite the off-field distraction, Argentina delivered a strong performance on the pitch. The reigning world champions defeated Iceland 3-0 in their final warm-up fixture, offering a positive sign ahead of the tournament.

Lionel Messi, who recently recovered from a hamstring issue, made a successful return to action. The veteran forward came off the bench, converted a penalty and looked sharp during his appearance, providing a timely boost for Lionel Scaloni’s side.

Neither FIFA nor the Argentine Football Association immediately provided a detailed explanation regarding the leak. However, the episode has highlighted the growing importance of cybersecurity and data protection in modern sport, particularly during events as significant as the World Cup.

Argentina will now turn its full attention to the tournament, where expectations remain high for the defending champions. While the passport leak has created unwanted headlines, the team will hope the incident becomes a minor distraction as they chase another World Cup triumph.
