Roberto Mancini has returned as Italy head coach for a second spell, nearly three years after resigning from the role, as the four-time world champions look to recover from missing a third consecutive FIFA World Cup. The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has turned to the Euro 2020-winning coach in the hope that he can rebuild the national team and restore its place among football’s elite.
Roberto Mancini back to rebuild the Azzurri
Mancini replaces Gennaro Gattuso, who stepped down after Italy’s unsuccessful World Cup qualifying campaign. His appointment comes after the federation explored several options before deciding to bring back the man who previously guided Italy to European glory.

Alongside Mancini’s return, Claudio Ranieri has been appointed technical director and will oversee the country’s football development. The two experienced figures are expected to work together to strengthen both the senior national team and the wider football structure.

Mancini first took charge of Italy in 2018 after the country’s failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup in Russia. He transformed the side into one of Europe’s strongest teams, leading them on a record 37-match unbeaten run before lifting the delayed UEFA Euro 2020 title with a penalty shootout victory over England at Wembley.
Roberto Mancini set for fresh challenge after past highs and lows
Although Mancini delivered European success, his first spell also ended in disappointment after Italy failed to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup following a play-off defeat to North Macedonia. He resigned in 2023 before taking charge of Saudi Arabia and later managed Qatari club Al Sadd.

Now back in charge, the 61-year-old faces the task of rebuilding a squad that has endured years of inconsistency and disappointment. Italy have now missed the last three FIFA World Cups, making the road back to international prominence even more challenging.

Mancini’s immediate priority will be preparing the team for the upcoming UEFA Nations League campaign while beginning the long-term process of building a competitive squad capable of qualifying for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. Italian football officials believe his experience, leadership and familiarity with the national team make him the right person to guide the Azzurri through another rebuilding phase.
