Sai Sudharsan creates unwanted IPL history with second hit-wicket dismiss

Sai Sudharsan’s remarkable IPL 2026 season witnessed another bizarre moment as the Gujarat Titans opener was dismissed hit wicket for the second time in his IPL career, creating an unwanted record in the tournament.

The unusual dismissal came during the Gujarat Titans’ Qualifier 1 clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Looking to accelerate the scoring, Sudharsan attempted an attacking shot but lost grip of his bat. The bat slipped from his hands and crashed into the stumps, dislodging the bails and ending his innings in an uncommon fashion.

A rare dismissal repeated

What made the incident even more remarkable was that it was not the first time Sudharsan had fallen victim to a hit-wicket dismissal.

During IPL 2022, while playing for Gujarat Titans against Mumbai Indians, he was dismissed in almost identical circumstances after his bat accidentally struck the stumps while attempting a shot. The latest dismissal made Sudharsan the first player in IPL history to be dismissed hit wicket twice. Hit-wicket remains one of cricket’s rarest forms of dismissal, making the achievement an unusual statistical record.

Despite the unfortunate exit, Sudharsan has enjoyed an outstanding season with the bat. The left-hander has been among Gujarat Titans’ most reliable performers, consistently providing solid starts and playing a key role in the team’s run to the playoffs.

Setback for Gujarat Titans

Sudharsan’s wicket came at a crucial stage of the chase and dealt a major blow to Gujarat Titans. His departure halted the team’s momentum as Royal Challengers Bengaluru tightened their grip on the contest.

With wickets falling at regular intervals, Gujarat struggled to keep pace with the required run rate. RCB capitalised on the opening and eventually secured a convincing victory to advance to the IPL 2026 final.

While the result was disappointing for Gujarat Titans, Sudharsan’s season remains one to remember. However, the opener will also be remembered for a rare piece of IPL history after becoming the first player to suffer two hit-wicket dismissals in the tournament, both in strikingly similar fashion.
