Indian shot putters Tajinderpal Singh Toor and Samardeep Singh Gill booked their places in the men’s final at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after clearing the qualification stage on Wednesday.

National record holder Toor advanced from Group A with a best throw of 20.14m. He opened with an effort of 19.93m before crossing the automatic qualification mark of 20m on his second attempt. Having secured his place in the final, he chose not to take his third throw.

His 20.14m effort was the second-best mark across both qualification groups.

Gill progresses with consistent performance

Competing in Group B, Samardeep Singh Gill also did enough to move into the medal round. His opening throw of 19.95m proved to be his best performance of the day.

Gill followed it with a throw of 19.75m before registering a foul on his final attempt. His best effort placed him fifth overall among the 15 athletes competing across the two qualification groups.

According to the competition rules, athletes who achieved the automatic qualification mark of 20m or finished among the top 12 performers advanced to Thursday’s final.

Tom Walsh tops qualification standings

Defending Commonwealth Games champion Tom Walsh of New Zealand led the qualification rankings with a throw of 21.03m in his opening attempt in Group A. Walsh entered the competition as one of the leading contenders for the title and comfortably secured the top spot ahead of the final.

Indian duo eye strong finish

Toor heads into the final carrying an impressive record. The 31-year-old owns the Indian national record of 21.77m, set in 2023, while his best throw this season stands at 21.03m.

The two-time Asian Games gold medallist is making his second Commonwealth Games appearance after finishing eighth at the 2018 Gold Coast Games. He was forced to miss the 2022 edition because of a groin injury.

Gill, 25, has also enjoyed steady progress this season. His personal best of 20.46m, which is also his season’s best, gives him confidence ahead of the final as India looks to challenge for a podium finish in Glasgow.
