Google introduces Gmail live AI at Google I/O 2026

Google has introduced a new artificial intelligence feature that will allow users to “talk” directly to their Gmail inbox using voice-based conversations. The announcement was made during Google I/O 2026, where the company showcased multiple AI-powered updates across its products and services.

The new feature, called Gmail Live, is powered by Google’s Gemini AI model and is designed to make email searching more interactive and conversational. Instead of manually typing keywords into Gmail’s search bar, users can simply ask questions aloud and receive direct answers from their inbox.

How Gmail Live works

Gmail Live can understand natural language questions and provide relevant information by scanning emails in real time. During demonstrations at Google I/O, the AI assistant was shown retrieving details about flight bookings, event timings, hotel reservations, and school-related information directly from email conversations.

Users will reportedly be able to ask follow-up questions without repeating full details, as the AI can maintain conversational context during interactions. This means people can continue refining searches naturally, similar to chatting with a digital assistant.

Google also stated that Gmail Live will show the source emails from where the information is pulled, allowing users to verify details quickly.

Part of Google’s larger AI expansion

The Gmail feature is part of Google’s broader push to integrate Gemini AI across its ecosystem. At Google I/O 2026, the company announced several AI-focused updates involving Search, Android, Workspace, Docs, and productivity applications.

Similar voice-conversation tools are also being introduced in Google Docs and Google Keep. In Docs, users may be able to brainstorm ideas through AI conversations, while Keep will reportedly convert spoken inputs into notes and reminders.

Google has been increasingly focusing on conversational AI experiences, aiming to reduce the need for traditional search-based interactions across apps.

Who will get the feature first

Google confirmed that Gmail Live will begin rolling out later this year. Initially, the feature is expected to be available to Google AI Ultra subscribers before expanding to other premium users gradually.

The company also clarified that Gmail Live will not replace the traditional email search system. Instead, it will function as an optional AI-powered tool designed to improve efficiency and help users find important information faster.

The announcement quickly drew strong reactions online, with many users calling it one of the most practical and useful AI updates introduced during this year’s Google I/O event.
