Meta has announced a fresh set of safety measures for teenagers across Instagram, Facebook and Messenger, introducing stricter content controls, AI-powered age detection tools and new parental alerts as regulators worldwide increase scrutiny of teen access to social media platforms.

According to a company blog post, the updates include the global rollout of 13+ content settings for Teen Accounts across all three platforms. The changes are designed to limit exposure to inappropriate content and strengthen safeguards for younger users.

Stricter controls for teen accounts

Meta said Facebook’s new default setting for teen users will automatically reduce the visibility of content deemed unsuitable for younger audiences in Feeds and Reels. The feature will also limit interactions with profiles, pages, groups and events that regularly share age-inappropriate content.

On Messenger, similar restrictions will prevent teens from viewing links to unsuitable Facebook content or communicating with accounts primarily associated with such material.

The company said the measures are intended to ensure that content recommendations remain appropriate for users’ age groups.

AI age detection and parental alerts

Meta is also expanding its AI-powered age assurance technology to identify accounts that may belong to underage users. The system analyses visual and contextual signals, including photos, videos and text-based indicators such as birthday references or school-grade mentions.

The company clarified that the technology does not use facial recognition. Instead, it estimates age ranges by assessing general physical characteristics and contextual information without identifying individuals.

The age-detection system will now be extended to Instagram Reels, Instagram Live and Facebook Groups.

In another safety-focused update, Instagram will begin notifying parents who use supervision tools if their teen repeatedly searches for content related to suicide or self-harm within a short period. The feature has been launched in India, Brazil and the European Union.

Unified parental supervision dashboard

In addition, Meta has also brought under one roof the parental control functions through its Family Center app. Parents would be able to oversee the activities of their teenagers on Instagram, Facebook, Messenger and Meta Horizon through this one dashboard.

According to the company, it is an attempt by Meta to make the parental controls simple and more effective for the parents to know how their teens use the services offered by Meta.

These latest developments have come in light of the ongoing efforts by the governments and regulators of multiple countries to pressure tech companies into taking additional steps in safeguarding children online.
