As India accelerates its transition towards cleaner fuels, a fresh wave of misinformation has created anxiety among vehicle owners. Viral social media posts recently claimed that using E20 fuel could result in insurance companies rejecting vehicle damage claims. The government has now stepped in to set the record straight.
The Press Information Bureau’s Fact Check Unit has categorically dismissed the claim, stating that motor insurance policies remain valid even when E20 fuel is used.
The clarification comes at a crucial time, as millions of motorists are gradually transitioning to ethanol-blended fuel under the government’s broader strategy to reduce crude oil imports and cut emissions.
The issue had gained traction after online discussions linked E20 usage to potential insurance complications, particularly for owners of older vehicles.
The government urges people not to believe unverified claims
In a post shared on the social media platform X, the Press Information Bureau urged citizens to avoid falling for misinformation.
The fact-checking agency clearly stated that there is no policy under which insurance claims are automatically rejected because a vehicle uses E20 fuel.
Authorities also advised the public to rely on official announcements instead of unverified social media forwards.
The clarification is aimed at preventing unnecessary panic among vehicle owners who may otherwise hesitate to adopt ethanol-blended fuels due to fear of losing insurance protection.
As India steadily expands its ethanol blending programme, consumer confidence will play a key role in ensuring a smooth transition.

ICICI Lombard also issues detailed clarification
NDTV noted that the confusion intensified after claims surfaced online suggesting that ICICI Lombard General Insurance would reject claims if vehicles suffered damage linked to E20 fuel usage.
The insurer subsequently released an official statement denying the allegations.
The company clarified that motor insurance policies remain fully valid regardless of whether E20 fuel is used. It further stated that using ethanol-blended fuel in older vehicles is not treated as negligence.
According to the insurer, claim eligibility depends on insured events such as accidents, theft, third-party liabilities and other covered incidents, not on the type of fuel used in the vehicle.
The company also reiterated its support for India’s ethanol programme, describing it as an environmentally progressive initiative.

The government’s reassurance comes at a significant moment for India’s automotive sector.
