Yamaha may introduce new R2 supersport bike as global 200cc offering

Yamaha Motor Company could soon expand its global supersport portfolio with the introduction of the all-new Yamaha YZF-R2, a motorcycle expected to bridge the gap between the highly popular R15 and the larger twin-cylinder R3.

Reports suggest the Japanese manufacturer is targeting multiple international markets for the new motorcycle, including India, the United States, Europe, Mexico and Australia. Trademark filings linked to the R2 name across several countries have further strengthened speculation that Yamaha is preparing the bike as a global product rather than a market-specific offering.

The expected arrival of the R2 comes at a time when the 200cc performance motorcycle segment is witnessing growing demand among younger riders looking for a balance between everyday usability and sporty performance.

Positioned between the R15 and R3

According to One Drive, the upcoming R2 is expected to slot neatly between the existing R15 and R3 models in Yamaha’s performance lineup.

While the R15 has earned a strong reputation for its sharp handling, fuel efficiency and beginner-friendly performance, the R3 caters to riders seeking higher-speed touring and twin-cylinder refinement. The R2 could emerge as a middle-ground option offering more power than the R15 without stepping into the premium pricing territory of the R3.

Industry reports indicate the motorcycle could feature an all-new 200cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine equipped with Yamaha’s Variable Valve Actuation technology.

Performance figures are expected to range between 20 and 25 PS, with torque output likely around 18 to 20 Nm paired to a six-speed gearbox.

Premium hardware likely

According to One Drive, Yamaha is also expected to continue using its lightweight Deltabox frame setup for the R2 to preserve the sporty riding dynamics associated with the company’s supersport motorcycles.

The bike may come equipped with an assist and slipper clutch, helping improve control during aggressive downshifts while also reducing rider fatigue in city conditions.

Reports further suggest the R2 could borrow several premium elements from the larger R3, including a more sophisticated instrument console and a sharper cockpit design aimed at enhancing its premium appeal.

India launch could follow global debut

According to One Drive, although Yamaha has not officially confirmed the motorcycle yet, reports indicate the R2 could make its global debut before the end of 2026, with an India launch likely to follow shortly afterwards.

If introduced in the Indian market, the expected ex-showroom pricing could range between ₹2 lakh and ₹2.20 lakh, placing it directly against several growing entry-level performance motorcycles in the segment.
