Apple could be preparing one of the biggest changes to its iPhone launch strategy in years. According to reports circulating within the technology industry, the company may break away from its traditional annual rollout by postponing the launch of the standard iPhone 18 until 2027.
If the reports prove accurate, Apple’s autumn 2026 event would focus entirely on premium devices, including the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and the company’s long-rumoured foldable smartphone. The move would mark a significant shift from Apple’s long-established practice of unveiling its entire flagship iPhone lineup together each September.
The strategy is seen as an attempt to create more distinct product cycles while giving individual models greater attention in an increasingly competitive smartphone market.
Apple could separate premium and standard iPhone launches
According to NDTV, under the reported roadmap, Apple would introduce its flagship Pro models in September 2026 while reserving the standard iPhone 18 for a standalone launch in spring 2027.
The decision could help Apple maintain consumer interest throughout the year rather than concentrating all major hardware announcements into a single event. It would also allow the company to position its first foldable smartphone as a headline product alongside its premium Pro lineup.
Industry watchers believe such a strategy could help Apple better compete in the premium segment while creating additional marketing opportunities for its mainstream devices.

Major performance and display upgrades expected
According to NDTV, despite being delayed, the standard iPhone 18 is expected to receive several significant upgrades. Reports suggest the device will be powered by Apple’s next-generation A20 processor, which could become the company’s first chip manufactured using advanced 2-nanometre technology.
The new chipset is expected to improve performance, battery efficiency and thermal management.
The device could feature a 6.3-inch OLED display with ProMotion support, bringing a 120Hz refresh rate to the standard model. Apple is also reportedly exploring ways to reduce the size of the Dynamic Island through under-display sensing technologies.
Memory could increase to 12GB of RAM, while storage options may begin at 256GB and extend to as much as 1TB.

Camera, software and pricing details emerge
According to NDTV, the standard iPhone 18 is expected to retain a dual-camera setup featuring a 48-megapixel primary sensor and a 48-megapixel ultra-wide lens. The front camera may receive a notable upgrade to 24 megapixels, improving selfie and video call performance.
Apple is also developing a second-generation in-house 5G modem that could make its way into the device, offering faster and more efficient connectivity.
On the software side, the phone is expected to ship with iOS 27 and feature expanded Apple Intelligence capabilities, including improvements to Siri and AI-powered tools. Satellite communication support is also expected to remain part of the package.
Current reports suggest Apple intends to keep pricing relatively stable, with the base iPhone 18 likely to start at around $799 in the United States and approximately ₹82,999 in India, although official pricing remains unconfirmed.
