Faye has always been one of the most important figures in the modern God of War saga despite never truly taking centre stage. That changes with God of War Laufey, the latest project from Santa Monica Studio, which transforms Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother into the franchise’s newest protagonist. Revealed during State of Play, the game begins at the moment Faye’s body is consumed by the funeral pyre, transporting her into a strange realm known as the Everywhen, where death is only the beginning of a much larger conflict.
A new world beyond the Norse realms
Rather than serving as a prequel, the game unfolds alongside the timeline of God of War and God of War Ragnarök. The Everywhen is portrayed as a chaotic afterlife populated by gods and mythological beings from across different cultures. Bonfires, floating gateways and imprisoned creatures create a hostile landscape where power struggles define everyday existence.
Among the first major threats Faye encounters are Sekhmet, the fearsome Egyptian goddess associated with vengeance and destruction, and Begtse, the Mongolian god of war. Their presence signals Santa Monica Studio’s ambition to move beyond Norse mythology and embrace a much wider mythological universe.

Faster combat and magic at the forefront
Unlike Kratos’ heavy and brutal fighting style, Faye relies on speed, agility and magical abilities. Developers describe her as every bit as dangerous as the Ghost of Sparta, but with a completely different approach to battle.
Combat blends fast swordplay with powerful magical attacks rooted in her Jötun heritage. According to the studio, magic is not simply a tool for Faye but an extension of who she is. As she journeys through the Everywhen, her powers evolve dramatically, allowing her to manipulate souls and unleash increasingly devastating abilities against enemies.

New allies and familiar emotional ties
According to Hollywood Life, one of the game’s most unusual additions is a sentient cube named Phranque, accompanied by an enchanted ribbon guardian called Rue. Together, they form an unlikely alliance with Faye and appear central to the story’s emotional core. Sony and Santa Monica Studio have not announced an official release date for God of War: Laufey. The game was revealed during PlayStation’s June 2026 State of Play presentation with a cinematic trailer and gameplay footage, but developers stopped short of confirming a launch window. More details are expected in the coming months as development continues.
Despite the shift in protagonist, Kratos and Atreus remain crucial to the narrative. Faye hears Kratos’ voice and experiences visions connected to her family, reinforcing that this is not a side story but a continuation of the same saga. Santa Monica Studio describes God of War Laufey as a new chapter in an ever-expanding universe, one that deepens the mythology while finally giving one of its most influential characters a chance to tell her own story.
