‘No toto on GT Road’: BJP MLA Dipanjan Chakraborty announces tough measures to ease congestion in Konnagar, Uttarpara

BJP MLA Dipanjan Chakraborty announced a series of measures to regulate e-rickshaw movement in Uttarpara and Konnagar, citing growing traffic congestion and recent reports of clashes among drivers.

The decisions were taken jointly by the police, the Regional Transport Office (RTO), the municipality, and local administration, he said.

New restrictions on GT Road, Konnagar underpass

Speaking to the media, Chakraborty said e-rickshaws, locally known as totos, would no longer be allowed to stand on GT Road.

“Firstly, totos won’t be allowed to stand on GT Road. Secondly, the major traffic congestion caused by these vehicles near the Konnagar railway station and underpass has become a serious concern. We, along with the police, RTO and the municipality, have taken the decision that not even a bicycle will be allowed to park on the Konnagar underpass,” he said.

He added that strict action would be taken against violators.

“If any vehicle stops there, whether it is a delivery vehicle or any other vehicle, it will be promptly clamped or taken to the police station. An FIR will also be lodged,” Chakraborty said.

Passenger pickup rules near railway station

The MLA also announced restrictions on passenger boarding and deboarding near Konnagar railway station.

“No toto or auto-rickshaw will be allowed to pick up or drop passengers within 60 metres of the railway station. The municipality chairperson, the traffic inspector, and I will personally mark the restricted radius around the station,” he said.

According to the plan, only five to six e-rickshaws will be allowed to park in the designated space adjacent to the station. All other vehicles will have to use a nearby ground as a parking area.

“A person will be appointed to regulate the movement of vehicles from the ground to the station-side parking zone so that traffic remains smooth,” Chakraborty added.

The announcement comes amid concerns over traffic bottlenecks and alleged indiscipline among e-rickshaw operators in the area. Local authorities are expected to begin implementing the new measures shortly.
